Why is it important to use a fruit and vegetable wash?

Updated: Jul 30, 2020

Most of us have been reminded about the importance of washing our fruits and vegetables before eating them, but what exactly is meant by "wash"? Is rinsing them with water alone, good enough?

Three important reasons why we should wash our fruits and veggies are to remove dirt, remove harmful bacteria and remove pesticide residues, which are considered toxic chemicals. By only rinsing your fruits and veggies, you are for sure getting rid of the dirt but not necessarily pesticides, chemicals, wax residues, and bacteria. When we sanitize our hands, we are told to use soap and water to get them clean. The same rule applies for our produce, using water alone is not safe enough for what we eat. Thinking about the nastiest microorganisms such as E. Coli, Salmonella, Listeria and Norovirus, might make you run to the nearest grocery store in search of the best fruit and vegetable cleaner. Not to mention, pesticides residues raise another concern, since they can highly affect human health by damaging the nervous and reproductive systems, disrupting the immune system, and even leading to cancer. According to the FDA, all fruits and vegetables should be wash, even if they are organic or bought at a farmer’s market. It is important to remember that just because produce is organic, that does not mean that no chemicals have been used in production.

With all these information, the next question would be:

How should we wash fruits and vegetables?

You could either create your own vegetable wash or you could also purchase a safe and effective fruit and vegetable cleaning solution.
